What Does A Massage Policy Include?

What is massage insurance?

An insurance claim or payout can be a major financial burden and could place your career and livelihood at risk not to mention lawsuits are costly and there are so many risks every day that could pop up to even the most experienced massage therapist.

Massage liability insurance is designed to protect the massage therapist when the unexpected happens. A policy includes the two most common coverages: professional (malpractice) and general (slip and fall) insurance.

Why do massage therapists need liability insurance?

Within the world of touch therapies, there are a few inherent risks that present themselves. Because your work involves frequent direct contact with the body, working with muscles, and cultivating muscular response, there is a wide range of potential accidents or injuries that could occur. Unfortunately, accidents happen and could place you at risk in a variety of ways—from a slip and fall to damaging your client's property during a at-home session.

With massage therapist insurance from NACAMS, you can rest assured knowing you’re prepared for an unfortunate accident. It is far better to be prepared for such an occasion with massage insurance than to be completely caught off guard if something were to occur.

Massage Services We Cover

In addition to general massage we cover, NACAMS also provides protection for bodyworkers who source income from other fitness & wellness services like yoga, massage therapy, personal training, Reiki, and 500 more. Review the most popular services we cover:

Acupressure

Acupressure therapy, also called acupoint massage, is an ancient system of alternative medicine centered on the flow of qi in the body. According to traditional Chinese medicine, qi is the ‘life energy’ which flows throughout the body’s 12 meridians or healing energy channels. The belief is a blockage in one of these meridians will result in an imbalance of qi and lead to illness. While Western massage therapy aims at releasing tension within the muscles and fascia, acupressure aims at releasing tension within the acupoints.

Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy is a modality of massage therapy, as well as an alternative medicine, which utilizes highly concentrated essential oils and other aromatic materials to improve cognitive function, mood and health. The essential oils are extracted from natural plant parts (flowers, leaves, seeds, or roots), mixed with other active ingredients (alcohol, lotion, or oil), and then applied via aerial diffusion, direct inhalation, or a topical application.

Asian Bodywork Therapy

Asian Bodywork Therapy (ABT) differs from other forms of massage therapy because it is grounded in the principles of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), which evaluate health in terms of the body’s energy system in order to treat the mind, body and spirit. According to the American Organization for Bodywork Therapies of Asia (AOBTA), strategies for assessment revolve around the Four Chinese Pillars of examination: observation, listening, asking, and touching. Strategies for treatment, however, are centered on the balance and circulation of the Five Essential Substances: jing (essence), jin-ye (bodily fluids), shen (spirit), xue (blood) and qi (energy).

Ayurvedic Bodywork

Ayurvedic bodywork is a component of Ayurvedic medicine, or Ayurveda, an ancient system of complementary medicine that originated in India thousands of years ago. The term is derived from two Sanskrit words—ayur meaning life and veda meaning knowledge or science. It is based on the concept of interconnectedness, suggesting that good health is a product of a balanced mind, body and spirit. Treatment involves the use of herbal remedies, dieting, exercise and bodywork.

Craniosacral Therapy

Cranial-sacral therapy (CST), or craniosacral therapy, is a noninvasive system of bodywork, which aims at releasing tension deep within the body. It is based on the Primary Respiratory Mechanism (PRM), a theory developed by William Sutherland, the founder of cranial osteopathy.

Deep-Tissue Massage

The term “deep tissue” refers to the system of connective tissue supporting and connecting the soft-tissue structures of the body, also called fascia. Deep-tissue massage is a manipulative therapy centered on treatment of said connective tissues and muscles. Often called connective-tissue massage (CTM), it aims at releasing tension and relieving pain from deep within the tissue in order to trigger healing in the internal organs.

Lymphatic Therapy

Lymphatic therapy, or lymphatic drainage, is a modality of massage therapy used for treatment of lymphedema, a condition caused by a blockage in the lymphatic system. As the blockage inhibits proper draining, lymph fluid accumulates, often causing swelling in one of the arms or legs. Lymphedema typically results from the removal of lymph nodes during surgery, but it may also be present at birth. In both cases, however, there is no cure. Lymphatic therapy thus aims at controlling the condition by encouraging the flow of lymph fluid throughout the limbs.

Medical Massage

Medical massage, also called clinical or treatment massage, is not a specific modality or technique, but rather an umbrella term for any outcome-based massage therapy prescribed by a physician. In short, the aim of all medical touch therapy is to encourage the body to heal itself and to promote physical and mental health and well being.

Myofascial Release

Fascia is the fibrous connective tissue surrounding and connecting the organs, muscles and other soft-tissue structures of the body. It is the single-most pervasive system of the body. Myofascial Release (MFR) is a system of bodywork focused on treatment of these myofascial connective tissues. Since tension is stored in the connective tissue, the fascia can easily become restricted, resulting in limited mobility. Individuals suffering from physical injuries are particularly susceptible to this due to damage of the connective tissue.

Oncology Massage

A noninvasive system of therapy used to treat patients with cancer. Therapists combine a variety of massage techniques in order to improve their patient’s quality of life and symptom management.

Pregnancy Massage

Pregnancy massage, also called prenatal or maternity massage, tailors bodywork to suit the physical and emotional needs of expectant mothers. Practitioners modify various techniques to address conditions associated with pregnancy, such as lower-back pain and insomnia. Prenatal massage serves as a particularly useful method of treatment as pregnant women are otherwise advised to abstain from taking medication. Practitioners often use customized massage tables designed to accommodate the woman’s body during pregnancy. They may also use bolsters or pillows to situate clients on their sides and prevent discomfort. Sessions may last anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour.

Reflexology

Reflexology is a system of bodywork, marked by the use of finger, thumb and hand techniques to apply pressure to areas on the hands, feet and ears without the use of massage oils. The underlying premise is that these areas correspond to specific internal organs, bones or systems of the body. Therefore, practitioners are able to treat internal health complications by applying pressure to said areas, known as reflex points or zones.

Seated Massage

Seated massage, also called chair massage, is a modality concentrated on treatment of the head, back and shoulders. These massages occur in ergonomic chairs. Clients are not required to take off their clothes, making this bodywork advantageous for those who are uncomfortable with nudity. Chair massages do not require the use of massage oil, and they are completed significantly faster than those requiring a massage table; they typically last 10-30 minutes.

Shiatsu

Shiatsu is a form of Asian Bodywork Therapy (ABT), which attempts to improve the circulation of qi through the stimulation of various acupuncture points. The Japanese word shiatsu is comprised of two parts — shi meaning finger and atsu meaning pressure — which literally translate to pressure of the fingers. Practitioners use their hands to strategically apply pressure to the acupoints, thereby removing blockages in the energy pathways or meridians and stimulating the natural healing powers of the body. According to the Acupressure Institute, shiatsu differs from other styles of acupressure because of its emphasis on the length of the meridians rather than on the points alone.

Spa Therapies

Any bodywork administered in a spa is considered a spa therapy. Such treatments may include hydrotherapy, herbal wraps, salt scrubs, aromatherapy, massage sessions and more.

Stone Massage

Stone massage therapy is a modality marked by the use of smooth, water-heated rocks to augment the therapeutic benefits of traditional Swedish massage. It is a system of thermotherapy, in which stones are heated to 130°F and then strategically placed along the spine, stomach, hands and feet, as well as rubbed into the muscles and soft tissues of the client. Therapists typically use basalt stones due to their ability to retain heat, and sessions last approximately 90 minutes.

Swedish Massage

A highly popular system of bodywork that relaxes the muscles through the use of five basic strokes: effleurage, petrissage, tapotement, friction and vibration.

Thai Massage

A system of traditional bodywork that incorporates elements of yoga, reflexology, shiatsu and acupressure.

Massage Insurance Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of massage is covered by massage insurance?

That depends on who your carrier is. NACAMS knows massage therapy often involves using two or more different techniques during a session. You may start with elements of a Swedish massage as a stress relief and then move on into a deep tissue to really work a muscle knot your client mentioned was bothering them.

Some programs only give you just a few modalities in their basic plans and then charge additional fees if you want to go beyond those. NACAMS does things different by covering more than 400 hundred different varieties of health and wellness modalities. Better yet, check our list of covered activities over and if you don’t see your specific service listed, call and ask our agents to see if it can be added.

Where can I compare massage insurance programs?

Right on our massage liability insurance page i.e. this one, you can see a comparison of our program right against the competition. We are really confident in our program and believe once you see everything we offer, at the incredible rates which we offer them at, you too will join the hundreds of fellow massage therapists that rated us as “excellent” on TrustPilot’s independent platform.

TrustPilot is also a great way to compare different programs and we encourage you to definitely do your homework before making an informed decision. TrustPilot independently solicits the reviews given by actual users of a product and then posts them on their site. In that way, what you read is a completely unbiased and unblemished account. Definitely a much better indicator of others’ experience over fake online reviews or companies only posting the good reviews on their site.

Why would a massage therapist need professional liability insurance?

Massage therapy is well, hands on therapy for most modalities unless you are a Reiki practitioner (don’t feel left out, we cover that too!). With any sort of massage therapy there are many different situations that can arise in the course of your career where an accident, an unforeseen event, or just a disgruntled client brings about causing a claim to be leveled against you.

Massage liability insurance gives you a buffer from having to pay out of your own pocket when another party holds you responsible for the injuries, damage to property, or even lost wages. Professional liability insurance from NACAMS provides $2 million for each occurrence and $3 million per member in total annually.

Can I get my massage therapy services covered by insurance?

Of course. There are many options out there for getting massage insurance. The better question is, “what is the best insurance for me?”. NACAMS knows massage and alternative medicine because that’s who we are. Our insurance is tailored just to professionals in health and wellness.

We wanted to create an accessible program that provides great coverage, but does so at a price our members can afford. Our massage insurance program does that with great coverage limits, low rates, and a plethora of awesome member benefits all included.

Is there a type of insurance for massage therapy?

Yes indeed and you’ve come to the right place. NACAMS massage insurance is made just for professional massage therapists as well as students studying to become future LMTs. We help professionals cover themselves in the event an unforeseen event occurs at some point in your career.

Accidents unfortunately happen every day and while you can choose not to be covered, doing so is at tremendous risk to your practice and your finances. Compared to our price which is as low as $179 per year for our professional massage insurance program, the costs of a claim or of defending yourself in a lawsuit can cost in the thousands of dollars.

How much is massage therapy insurance?

We have several options to choose the best path for you and your practice within our comprehensive massage therapy insurance program:

  • Professional Rate for Insurance Plus: $179 per year
  • Student Rate for Insurance Plus: $60 per year
  • Adding Additional Businesses: $10 per business, per year or $30 per year for unlimited businesses

Can I get massage liability insurance while I’m still attending massage school?

With NACAMS you definitely can get massage liability insurance coverage while still in school. In fact, it’s probably one of the smartest things you can do to help you in your new career. Our student rate is deeply discounted to make it a no brainer for students practicing to become licensed therapists. For just $60, you get a full year of coverage with all the bells and whistles of our professional policies.

A good option to consider is to delay getting this students only policy until you are almost through with school. While you do have to still be in school to get coverage, waiting until you are almost done means you get covered, graduate and get licensed, and then get to start practicing massage therapy with full insurance coverage that low $60 rate

Can I get individual massage insurance if I work in a massage studio?

Yes you can and you definitely should. Your studio owner’s policy may not provide very much coverage and many claims are leveled against both the studio and the individual therapist. Having your own comprehensive insurance for just $179 per year means you get the peace of mind knowing you have your own individual limits of $2 million per occurrence and $3 million annually for general and professional liability.

What does ‘individual coverage’ mean with massage therapy liability insurance?

Many insurance programs pool your claim with a group of others and will set a group limit. So, if multiple members of the group have claims in a given year, the remainder of the limit may not be adequate to cover you fully in the event of a claim. With NACAMS, your policy is 100% your own. You alone get all the way up to $2 million for each occurrence and you alone get up to $3 million in total per year (this is called an annual aggregate).

What insurance is good for a massage therapist?

Massage therapy insurance is a unique program because massage is a very much hands on occupation. This close proximity to clients that are coming in with different levels of health, provides many opportunities for accidents and mishaps to occur. A terribly mundane, but all-too-real claim event occured when a client accidentally rolled off the massage table and held the therapist liable for their injuries. Accidents like these occur every day and just by offering services, you are opening yourself up to the possibility of one day facing a claim against you. The three pillars of massage insurance are: general liability, professional liability, and product liability.

  • General liability insurance: provides protection from claims for injury and/or property damage that occurred on your premises.
  • Professional liability insurance: provides coverage for claims against the massage services you provide and any injury or damages that allegedly happened as a result.
  • Product liability insurance: important coverage providing protection against claims related to an adverse allergic reaction a client may have to a product. Simply rubbing on a massage lotion that induces a bad reaction could very well have a client holding you responsible for their mountains of medical bills.

We didn’t want to leave a single gap in our coverage for massage therapists so also include additional protection mechanisms like an Identity Protection Plan.

I am moving states, how do I move my insurance coverage with me?

With NACAMS you don’t have to do anything. Your massage therapy insurance program through us enjoys what’s known as “full portability”. In insurance speak, this means you can provide therapy sessions at conferences, move your practice across state lines, offer mobile massage therapy, or anywhere else you can think to offer services within the 50 states and still have complete coverage. Now, your license is completely separate from our massage insurance program and you need to take the appropriate steps to get properly licensed to perform services in your new digs. We cannot cover any services that you are not legally permitted to perform.

What is the best massage therapy insurance available right now?

It may go without saying but the best massage therapy insurance will be the one that’s right for you. That means it adequately provides coverage for your unique therapy offering, does so at a competitive rate, and remains accessible when you actually need to use it. The comparison grid we outlined above shows we do just this and more. The NACAMS difference is that we know this industry because that’s where we’ve always been. We’ll help shoulder the financial burden of accidents and other mishaps so you can focus on providing great therapy to your clients.

What additional fees do you pay for massage therapy insurance?

With NACAMS, we have a $5 handling fee.

What Is Massage Therapy Insurance?

Massage insurance is protection for your career from the risk of the unknown. At its very core, a massage therapy insurance policy is a contract between you and your insurance provider. The policy says exactly what is covered, how much coverage you have, and all the additional terms that define your insurance plan. What massage insurance does is protect policyholders from different forms of risks present in health and wellness. Car insurance protects you in car accidents, home insurance helps cover repair costs if your home is damaged, and massage insurance protects you professionally from accidents and mishaps.

Professional, general, and product liability are three of the most common types of risks for massage therapists which is why these coverage areas generally have larger limits. NACAMS includes these three pillars of protection and takes it a step further to provide 360 degrees of coverage.

How quickly am I covered?

In as little as a few minutes, you can get the all-inclusive massage therapist insurance coverage that will provide ultimate protection and active confidence in your career. Keep yourself and your career safe with massage insurance from NACAMS—we make it simple and affordable to get the coverage you need. Get insured today and let NACAMS protect you and your profession with massage therapy liability insurance.
