What is a Deep Tissue Massage?

The term “deep tissue” refers to the system of connective tissue supporting and connecting the soft-tissue structures of the body, also called fascia. Deep-tissue massage is a manipulative therapy centered on treatment of said connective tissues and muscles. Often called connective-tissue massage (CTM), it aims at releasing tension and relieving pain from deep within the tissue in order to trigger healing in the internal organs.

This system of bodywork is grounded in the belief that changes in the superficial tissues (i.e., increased muscle tone, changed interstitial fluid in the tissues, hypersensitivity to touch) are indicative of dysfunctions in the deep tissues; these interactions are provoked by the body’s neural reflexes.[i] In utilizing deep-tissue techniques, then, massage therapists manipulate the surface of the body to stimulate reactions deep within the body.

To address specific dysfunctions, the body is divided into several reflex zones, each of which corresponds to an internal organ. Because of this, the client must be thoroughly consulted and examined before their treatment. Practitioners observe changes in the connective tissue, identify the reflex zone wherein the changes have occurred, and then treat that zone to improve the function of its corresponding organ. To execute the massage, they apply firm pressure to the affected areas of the body with the fingertips and palms in the form of gliding and cutting strokes. Additional techniques involve pulling and stretching the skin to soften the connective tissue.

Deep Tissue Massage History

The historical roots of deep-tissue techniques are somewhat uncertain. Some claim this touch therapy was first used in ancient Egypt, while others believe its origins to be much less prehistoric. Regardless of its ancestry, however, experts agree that the modern incarnation of CTM was pioneered by Elizabeth Dicke, a German physiotherapist, in 1928. While suffering from a circulatory dysfunction in her right leg, Dicke performed deep-tissue techniques on herself, and when her circulation successfully improved, she began conducting research on her methods.[ii]

In 1989, John Latz, another prominent pioneer of CTM, attempted to optimize preceding methods of treatment by delineating five underlying principles of deep-tissue therapy:

  • Leaning controlled body weight into the client
  • Maintaining alignment
  • Movement through the alignment
  • Using oblique angles of contact
  • Contacting with soft and relaxed hands and body.[iii]

Latz founded the Institute for Structural Integration (ISI) in 1992, after receiving advanced certification in massage therapy from the Rolf Institute. He is often credited as a developer of the deep-tissue technique.

NACAMS massage therapists' liability insurance is the most competitive rate in the industry at $179/year.

Health Benefits Of Deep Tissue Massages

The most apparent health benefit resulting from deep-tissue massage therapy is the alleviation of chronic pain and tension. This includes pain associated with sports-related injuries, arthritis, fibromyalgia, carpal tunnel syndrome, sciatica and other musculoskeletal conditions. Deep-tissue massage also results in improved posture and increased flexibility. Individuals suffering from restricted mobility may experience an extended range of motion.

    Massage Insurance FAQs

Do you have questions about insurance? Or maybe questions about the coverages, details, and benefits offered by NACAMS massage liability insurance? We’re here to help. Take a look at some of the most frequently asked questions.

    Is liability insurance expensive?

Liability insurance is actually less expensive than most insurance products on the market. For only $179 per year, you get the peace of mind of full coverage for general and professional liability.

How do you know what services are covered by deep massage therapy insurance?

We provide coverage for over 500 different modalities, all included at no extra cost. Many programs only cover a limited number of modalities, and then upcharge members if they want to add a covered service to their policy. We cover the majority of popular services in use today because we know that the perfect sessions often require incorporating multiple techniques.

Can I get deep massage therapy insurance if I’m still in school?

For just $60/YR, massage students can get a policy that includes the same coverage levels as the pro policy. While the possibility of incidents is less during your student training than as a professional, all it takes is one event to possibly sideline an entire career.

Does deep massage therapy insurance follow you if you change jobs?

Yes, even if you change your job or move to another state, your coverage will follow you as long as you still meet the requirements to perform services as issued by your new locale.

Can I get liability insurance if I provide services in different offices?

Yes, if you teach at more than one massage studio, you would be covered at all with our insurance.

How long do you have to file a claim?

Occurrence form coverage says that it doesn’t matter if you file a claim after your policy expires for a claim event that happened during the time when the policy was active - the claim is still covered. NACAMS gives you a full two years after your policy has expired to report a claim.

Claims made coverage is the opposite - it says if the policy is expired, no claims will be covered even if the event occurred at a time when the policy was indeed active. Occurrence form coverage is employed in our insurance membership and is the industry-preferred option.

What is the appropriate level of liability insurance for deep massage therapy insurance?

Massage liability insurance needs to provide an adequate level of coverage based on the risks inherent to the health and wellness industry. NACAMS is a recognized leader in deep tissue massage and alternative medicine and so designed our program to provide appropriate levels of coverage but still be affordable for our members. With that, we provide $2 million for each occurrence and $3 million in total for each policyholder per year in professional and general liability coverage. We also include $2 million in product liability coverage. We find these limits to be well suited for the industry.

What additional benefits come with deep massage therapy liability insurance?

Our policies comes with many different benefits included at no extra fee. Members get a free professional website, access to our Health Insurance Marketplace, and discounts on everyday expenses like shipping, rental cars, hotels, pet insurance, and more.

Does the policy include any additional layers of protection?

While general and professional liability coverage may cover the bulk of liabilities faced, without a few additional layers of protection, key areas could still present great risks to a professional. An identity protection plan ($25,0000) is also included in our plans as part of an effective risk management strategy.
