Cosmetology covers a wide range of fields, and to become a cosmetologist in Illinois, you’ll need 1500 hours to get your license, which you’ll have to renew every even numbered year. Some of the professionals in this field include make-up artists, nail technicians, small salon owners, estheticians, barbers, beauticians, and hairdressers. Professional cosmetologists have the work of supporting their clients with various beauty needs. The job sometimes involves application of certain chemical treatments that may have a negative effect on a client’s skin or hair.
For this reason, each and very professional should have individual insurance coverage. Whether you work in a medical spa, a salon, or by yourself, it is vital to have the right insurance coverage that will protect your personal reputation and financial assets.
Why Do You Need Insurance Coverage?
Having cosmetology insurance in Illinois will help cover for the risks you face such as hair color treatment gone bad or facial treatment gone wrong. Without insurance coverage, you may be required to pay for property damage, third party bodily injuries, and court ordered or legal defense settlements out of your own pocket. In addition, you could remain out of work while having to concentrate on an expensive court case. Due to such reasons, cosmetologist insurance remains the best option to protect your future career and your personal assets.
Insurance Coverage Options
Most cosmetology policies in Illinois will offers two main types of liability insurance, and many will offer product liability, which you should be sure to look for. The main two types of insurance include:
1. General liability insurance
This may cover two areas:
- Bodily injury: As the cosmetologist performs a facial treatment, he/she may apply a moisturizer that reacts with the client skin. Since the product was provided by the cosmetologist, the client may blame the cosmetologist for providing faulty product and thus he/she may claim for damages. In such a situation, general liability insurance may protect a beautician from third-party injury claims and related medical costs
- Damage to the client’s property: A cosmetologist may be asked to provide on-site services at the client’s home. During this time, equipment may malfunction starting some fire that may damage the client’s property. Following such an incidence, the client may sue the cosmetologist for property damage. In such a case, general liability insurance may protect one from such claims.
2. Professional liability claims
This may cover two general areas:
- Emotional distress: In a situation where the cosmetologist leaves the treatment on the client’s hair for long, scalp burns and hair damages may result and cause emotional distress. For this reason, the client may make claims for emotional damages and loss of wages since he/she cannot return to work for several weeks. Professional liability insurance will help you in such a situation.
- Treatment gone wrong: If a cosmetologist applies chemical to the client’s skin but the chemical causes skin burns, the client may sue the cosmetologist and make claims. If such a claim is made, professional liability insurance will offer protection.
Stay Protected With An Occurrence-Form Policy
Occurrence Form (also known as Occurrence Based) is the industry-preferred policy type because you are covered for any incident that happened while your policy was in effect, even if your policy has expired.
Other providers sell Claims-made policies, where any claim filed after the policy expires will not be covered. No matter if you choose NACAM or not, definitely make sure your provider has "occurrence form" coverage.
