How To Get A Cosmetology License

May 15, 2026 by Myriah Pitcher

How To Get A Cosmetology License

If you’ve been thinking about working in beauty professionally, getting licensed is usually the first real step. There’s a process, but it becomes much simpler once you see each step clearly.

Learning how to get a cosmetology license comes down to three main things: training, testing, and applying. Each step builds on the last, and once you know what to expect, it feels a lot more manageable.

Step 1: Enroll in a State-Approved Program

Before anything else, you’ll need formal training. Every state requires you to complete a certain number of hours at a licensed cosmetology school. This goes beyond learning how to do hair or nails.

The program typically covers areas such as:

  • Sanitation and safety practices

  • Hair cutting, coloring, and styling

  • Skincare basics

  • Nail technology

  • Client communication

The number of required hours varies depending on where you live, but it typically falls somewhere between 1,000 and 2,000 hours.

Step 2: Complete Your Training Hours

Once you’re enrolled, the goal is simple: finish your required hours. Most programs combine classroom learning with hands-on practice. That means you won’t just be watching demonstrations; you’ll actually be working on real clients (usually in a student salon setting).

This part matters more than people think. It is where you:

  • Build confidence with real techniques

  • Learn how to interact with clients

  • Start developing your own style

By the time you’re done, you should feel comfortable performing core services, not just understanding them.

Step 3: Pass the Licensing Exams

After completing your training, the next step is testing. Most states require two exams: a written (theory) exam and a practical (hands-on) exam.

The written exam tests your knowledge of safety, procedures, and general cosmetology concepts. The practical exam is where you demonstrate your skills in a controlled setting.

This part can feel intimidating, but it’s really about showing what you’ve already learned. If you’ve been paying attention during training and practicing consistently, you’re more prepared than you think.

Step 4: Apply for Your License

Once you pass your exams, you’re ready to apply for your license through your state’s cosmetology board. This usually involves:

  • Submitting Proof of Training Hours: Your school will typically provide documentation showing you’ve completed the required hours. Some states receive this directly from the school, while others may ask you to upload or mail it yourself.

  • Providing Your Exam Results: After passing your written and practical exams, your scores are either sent automatically or given to you to include with your application. This confirms you’ve met the state’s testing requirements.

  • Paying an Application Fee: Most states require a licensing fee at this stage. The amount varies, but it’s a standard part of finalizing your application.

After everything is reviewed and approved, you’ll officially be licensed to work as a cosmetologist in your state. That’s the point where you can start taking clients and getting paid for your work.

Step 5: Keep Your License Active

Getting licensed isn’t the final step; instead, it’s the beginning of your career. Depending on the state and where you're licensed, you may be required to renew your license every one to three years and participate in continuing education.

Staying current helps you keep up with industry trends and maintain safety standards. It also helps you stay legally compliant. While it is a simple step, it’s an important one if you want to keep working without interruptions.

What Makes the Process Feel Overwhelming?

For a lot of people, the stress around how to get a cosmetology license doesn’t come from the steps themselves. It usually comes from small details such as missing paperwork, not knowing the required hours, or waiting too long to prepare for exams.

A little preparation goes a long way here. If you stay organized and take each step one at a time, the process becomes much easier to handle.

Take the Next Step Toward Your Cosmetology Career

By now, you’ve got a clear path: enroll in a program, complete your hours, pass your exams, and apply for your license. That’s the core of it.

Once you’re ready to start working, make sure to protect the career you’ve worked hard to build. Cosmetology insurance helps cover things like client injuries or claims related to your services, so one situation doesn’t turn into a major setback.

Get covered today with NACAMS Cosmetology Insurance. It’s a simple step that lets you focus on your clients and your craft, without second-guessing the “what ifs.”
