Professional Yoga Liability Insurance is an Investment Every Yoga Teacher Should Make

Liability insurance is relatively low cost, especially when compared to the price tag of an average lawsuit.

In Michigan, lakeside yoga classes are a very popular option and a great value-add to offer as a teacher or a studio. With NACAMS, you're covered anywhere you teach including public places like state parks and waterfronts.

And while lakeside yoga is a wonderful, unique experience, it also comes with its own set of unique risks that our policy covers such as if a client were to become ill from extreme heat, sun exposure, or dehydration. Additionally, slippery rocks and other wet surfaces can lead to sprained ankles or strained muscles.

A NACAMS Policy Includes:

  • Professional & General Liability Insurance: $2 million per occurrence; $3 million annually
  • Personal Injury & Advertising Coverage: $2 million individual aggregate
  • Identity Protection Plan: $25,000
  • Coverage in all 50 States
  • Occurrence Form Coverage
  • Online Classes (Live & Prerecorded) Coverage

500+ Modalities Covered—No Extra Cost

What are the Insurance Requirements for Michigan Yoga Teachers?

Yoga instructors in Michigan are not required to carry a Michigan yoga insurance policy to shield them from personal liability. Additionally, unless required by an establishment (gym or health club), or a special licensing requirement (working with children, or a special form of yoga), instructors are not required to hold any certification in order to work as an instructor.

How Do I Become a Yoga Teacher in Michigan?

To become a yoga teacher in Michigan, start by finding a yoga teacher training program (typically 200-hour, 300-hour, or 500-advanced hour) that matches your interests and schedule. Depending on the form of yoga, and the facility that you choose to work with, it might be best to earn the advanced level certification, to ensure the minimal hour requirements are met. Many larger health facilities will want their yoga instructors to be certified, so it is good practice to receive the formal training, especially if you plan on working for an employer, as opposed to opening your own studio.

Understanding Yoga Teacher Insurance In Michigan

Like most other states, in Michigan, you are not required to hold a Michigan yoga liability insurance policy in order to work as an instructor. Of course, you require business insurance if you own a private studio, but individual liability insurance for yoga instructors is not required. On the flip side, larger facilities, and those that train younger students, are required to hold special certification, as well as minimum liability insurance policies, in order to shield them from lawsuits.

Due to the fact that you want to protect your career and yourself in the event of an injury, even though the state does not require it, you should get liability insurance. If you plan on working as a yoga instructor, it is smart practice to hold a Michigan yoga insurance policy, not only to protect yourself from the personal liability aspect, but from other aspects, too. The best programs will give you general, professional, and identity coverage. When you choose the right insurance policy to cover you, you’ll have made a savvy investment to protect your professional yoga career.

How Much do Yoga Teachers in Michigan Make?

According to ZipRecruiter.com, yoga teachers in Michigan on average make $28.43/hour. However, in cities like Marquette, Novi, and Grand Rapids, instructors can earn up to $35/hour. This can vary depending on factors like if you work only part-time, which studio you work for, if you offer classes independently and so on.

Stay Protected With An Occurrence-Form Policy

Occurrence Form (also known as Occurrence Based) is the industry-preferred policy type because you are covered for any incident that happened while your policy was in effect, even if your policy has expired.

Other providers sell Claims-made policies, where any claim filed after the policy expires will not be covered. No matter if you choose NACAM or not, definitely make sure your provider has "occurrence form" coverage.
