What is a Reflexology Massage?

Reflexology

Reflexology applies pressure to areas on the hands, feet, and ears. The underlying premise is that these areas correspond to specific internal organs, bones or systems of the body. Therefore, practitioners are able to treat internal health complications by applying pressure to said areas, known as reflex points or zones. Similar to acupressure, this treatment of the reflex zones is said to stimulate the body’s life force energy or chi. However, the reflex points utilized in this modality differ from the acupoints and meridians outlined in Asian Bodywork techniques. In order to systemize this theory, reflexologists developed a reflex map, which divides the body into ten vertical zones (five on each side). All of the zones are connected by nerve endings that carry electrical impulses and energy throughout the body.

Reflexology Massage History

Reflexology appears to have originated from ancient Egypt, circa 2300 B.C., as substantiated by illustrations found in a physician’s tomb. The contemporary practice, also known as zone therapy, was founded by William H. Fitzgerald, M.D. In the early twentieth century, Fitzgerald, an American E.N.T. surgeon, employed aspects of zone therapy to his patients in order to numb regions of the body before surgery. Soon thereafter, he wrote the well-known guide Zone Therapy. Additional pioneers include Joe S. Riley, M.D., and his wife, Elizabeth A. Riley.

In more recent years, Eunice Ingham conducted research to extrapolate the methods of her predecessors. She performed case studies and carefully mapped out the reflex zones, detailing her findings in the books Stories The Feet Can Tell. Today, Ingham is considered the founder of the discipline in its contemporary form.

Health Benefits Of Reflexology Massages

Reflexology is known to alleviate pain, improve circulation, promote healing and normalize functions of the organs, muscles and other systems of the body. The applied pressure helps release build-ups of tension, unblocking nerve impulses and increasing circulation of blood throughout the body. It also produces numerous mental benefits, such as increased energy and decreased stress, anxiety, and depression. While massage therapy typically aims at relaxing the connective tissue or muscles, zone therapy aims at relaxing all systems of the body, including the glands, organs, bones and muscles. It is a mind-body practice, which provides mental and physical stability to individuals all over the world.

NACAMS massage insurance membership includes full portability which means you get coverage no matter where you decide to provide services within all 50 states. If you teach at 2 different massage studios part-time you would be covered at both with our insurance.

Is massage insurance right for me?

In 18 of of 50 states massage liability insurance is a requirement to keep an active license. Please follow your state's law in order for you to legally practice massage. If you are located in a state that does not require insurance, we strongly recommend you still purchase liability insurance to protect your hard-earned financial assets. It only takes one second for an accident to occur, don't get caught unprotected.

How long do you have to file a claim?

Occurrence form coverage says that it doesn’t matter if you file a claim after your policy expires for a claim event that happened during the time when the policy was active - the claim is still covered. NACAMS gives you a full two years after your policy has expired to report a claim.

Claims made coverage is the opposite - it says if the policy is expired, no claims will be covered even if the event occurred at a time when the policy was indeed active. Occurrence form coverage is employed in our insurance membership and is the industry-preferred option.

What is the appropriate level of liability insurance for massage insurance?

Massage liability insurance needs to provide an adequate level of coverage based on the risks inherent to the health and wellness industry. NACAMS is a recognized leader in massage and alternative medicine and so designed our program to provide appropriate levels of coverage but still be affordable for our members. With that, we provide $2 million for each occurrence and $3 million in total for each policyholder per year in professional and general liability coverage. We also include $2 million in product liability coverage. We find these limits to be well suited for the industry.

What additional benefits come with massage therapist liability insurance?

Our policies comes with many different benefits included at no extra fee. Members get a free professional website, access to our Health Insurance Marketplace, and discounts on everyday expenses like shipping, rental cars, hotels, pet insurance, and more.

Does the massage liability insurance program have adequate general and professional liability coverage limits?

General liability (slip and fall) provides members with coverage for third party claims of injury while professional liability (malpractice) provides coverage for claims relating to the services you provided to a client. NACAMS massage liability insurance provides $2 million for each occurrence and a $3 million annual aggregate.

Does the policy include any additional layers of protection?

While general and professional liability coverage may cover the bulk of liabilities faced, without a few additional layers of protection, key areas could still present great risks to a professional. An identity protection plan is all included in our plans as part of an effective risk management strategy.

Is my service covered under the program?

One of the worst shocks you can experience is to think you are covered by your massage insurance only for them to say that the unique services you provide aren’t actually covered under the policy. Our policies provide coverage for hundreds of different health and wellness services so members can focus on providing a great experience to their students rather than if a given service is covered or not.
