How to Transfer Your Cosmetology License to Florida

January 30, 2026 by Myriah Pitcher

How to Transfer Your Cosmetology License to Florida

If you’re a licensed cosmetologist in another U.S. state, transferring your license to Florida can be easier than you think. Florida's endorsement process streamlines the transition.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you understand what’s involved.

Step 1: Confirm Your Eligibility

Before you start the transfer process, be sure that your current license is active and in good standing. Florida’s Board of Cosmetology requires that out-of-state licensees have:

  • Completed a cosmetology program recognized in your home state

  • Held an active cosmetology license in another U.S. state or territory

If your license has expired, you’ve had disciplinary actions, or didn’t complete your training, you might face extra requirements or some delays. Also, note that apprenticeship licenses do not qualify for automatic endorsement. You'll need to meet Florida's standard training-hour requirements and pass the state exam.

Step 2: Gather Required Documentation

Florida’s licensing board will ask for a few key documents to process your endorsement application. You’ll typically need:

  1. A completed Application for Cosmetology Licensure by Endorsement (COSMO 4‑B)

  2. Proof of your current license, usually verified directly through your home state’s licensing board

  3. Your certificate from the Florida-approved, 4-hour Initial HIV/AIDS course (completed within two years of applying)

  4. Official transcripts from your cosmetology school

  5. A valid government-issued ID

Gather these documents in advance to avoid delays.

Step 3: Submit Your Application

Once you have all your documents ready, go ahead and submit your application to the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR). You can usually do this online or by mail. When you submit, you’ll also pay any required fees. Just keep in mind that fees can change, so check the application for the current costs.

After you submit it, the board will review your credentials to make sure everything checks out. Processing times can vary, so it’s wise to submit your application several weeks before you plan to start working in Florida.

Step 4: Receive Your Florida License

Once the board reviews your application and approves all your documents, you’ll receive your Florida cosmetology license. With your license in hand, you can legally work in salons, spas, and other cosmetology settings across the state.

Additional Tips for a Smooth Transition

  • Keep your paperwork organized: Save copies of all your application materials, transcripts, and certificates. It’s much easier to handle follow-up questions from the board if you have them handy.

  • Maintain your home-state license: Keep it active until your Florida license is approved in case the board needs verification.

  • Network locally: Start connecting with Florida salons, spas, and cosmetology communities even before your license arrives. It can help you land your first clients or job quickly once you’re licensed.

  • Stay up to date on continuing education: Even though you’re transferring your license, Florida requires continuing education for renewals. Get familiar with these requirements so that maintaining your license is simple and stress-free.
