Microblading Insurance

Microbladers must have the skilled, steady hands to use a small tool affixed with an assortment of tiny needles with incredible artistry to shape client’s eyebrows in a way that helps them look and feel their best.

The business of microblading is exploding in America, as clients view the prolonged effects of perfectly-shaped eyebrows more than worth the slight pain that can come with a session. However, these inherent qualities can also be what present the most risk to professionals practiced in providing this specialized service and what makes insurance for microblading a necessary tool in your business toolkit.

Protect Yourself Against Claims: Liability Insurance

When you add in the fact that estheticians are often working with potentially dangerous products and tools, the risk of a client suffering some kind of harm seems to go up. For example, if a client has booked an appointment with you for a brow wax, but the heat on your wax somehow got turned up too high, you might end up burning that client during the session. Remember: Even the most careful and professional esthetician is not immune to accidents or equipment malfunctions now and again.

In the above example, if the client who was burned during the brow wax decided to sue you for the damages she suffered, then you would want liability insurance on your side. If you did not possess insurance, then you would have to bear the financial burden of the legal process and possible settlement cost.

With esthetician liability insurance, however, the high cost associated with claims does not come out of your own pocket. An esthetician policy is designed specifically to provide the necessary financial support and coverage in incidents such as the one described above.

Many different services may fall within the skill set of a successful professional esthetician. These services might include everything from waxing and soothing facials to chemical peels and microdermabrasion. In this industry, where you work so closely and physically with each client, it is important to have solid esthetician liability insurance on your side. Securing insurance means you will have malpractice liability coverage, which is essential when involved with risk.

Accident Lawsuit Coverage: General Liability Insurance

In fact, a primary form of insurance that an Esthetician policy includes is general liability insurance. This type of insurance, also known as “slip and fall” insurance, is the kind that almost every business wants and needs. If someone slips on a small spill and suffers an injury, for instance, a lawsuit can happen. This type of accident can happen anytime, anywhere, and any business that allows a customer on the property is a candidate for such a claim.

Protect Your Items and Equipment

Sometimes things happen that are out of your control. Items get stolen, a client has an allergic reaction to a product, or your professional equipment is damaged. This is why NACAMS includes Product Coverage, Rental Damage Insurance, and Stolen Equipment Insurance with our General and Professional Liability Coverage. These can help you out in case one of these unexpected occurrences happen.

Understanding Microblading Insurance Policy Limits

Microblading professionals know sessions can become intricate and up-close-and-personal with clients wanting the perfect look post-session. Policy limits for professional coverage has to be robust enough to cover these professionals in the event of a claim against them but should never be more than what’s needed. Our professional policies include smart limits like:

  • Professional/General Liability: $2 Million per occurrence / $3 Million annual aggregate
  • Identity Protection Coverage: $25,000
  • Personal Injury and Advertising Injury: $2 Million

Limits are designed in order to be able to cover our members when an unfortunate event gives rise to a claim. Whether that’s in the form of us covering a member’s legal defense fees from a disgruntled client’s alleged claims or by providing identity recovery services in the event of fraud, we provide all-encompassing coverage designed after years of actually living, working, and breathing the industry of beauty and health.

The Necessity of Insurance for Microblading

Microblading professionals have one of the toughest jobs in all of the beauty business. The skills needed level true artistry within the profession. But because of the nature of the work, liability unfortunately exists in what can be greater proportions compared to other services. Let’s run down each of our microblading insurance coverage provisions to get a feel for how each provides a pillar of service that holds up a truly comprehensive insurance program for professionals.

  • General Liability: a liability is something the law says you have to pay for. For a General Liability, you can be held responsible for having to pay for someone else’s damages that were inflicted after they entered the space in which you operate. General liability insurance will often be referred to as “slip and fall insurance” as these types of claims have become all-too-common for business owners. Whether fabricated or not, claims can be costly. To combat this type of liability, our policies come with a solid limit of $2 million for each claim and $3 million in total claims for an individual member each year.
  • Professional Liability: aka “malpractice insurance”, for a professional liability claim, someone you provided services to would be alleging that those services you provided caused them to suffer some form of harm and they wish you to help them recover their losses in some fashion. Some may sue you for damages, others may simply demand you cover their medical payments for what they are alleging is malpractice on your part. Our professional liability limits have the same $2 million per occurrence and $3 million aggregate as our general liability. Imagine having to pay all of the costs of a claim out of your own pocket if you didn’t have insurance!

When we start talking in the millions of dollars in coverage it can seem impressive. You may wonder why you would need to include any additional protection with that level of core coverage. While the majority of the claims we encounter do indeed fall within these three coverage areas, we take it to another level with safeguards designed with the real world in mind by adding identity protection plan to the total package that we bring to professionals in the field of microblading.

A Look at Occurrence Form Versus Claims-Made

If you have been browsing around for microblading insurance, you probably have heard mention of a policy being “claims-made”. What this means to you is that after your policy expires, any claims that come up are not covered. The only exception to this would be if you have purchased a special extension known in the insurance industry as a “tail”. Claims-made policies can be tricky in health and wellness when a client might take weeks or even months to file a claim for injuries. If they file a claim against you after your policy has expired with a claims-made policy, you’ll more than likely be faced with having to come up with the expenses yourself.

The other side of claims-made is occurrence form coverage. We choose to provide this type of insurance policy because it provides coverage for events that occurred while a policy was indeed still in effect - during a time that the claim would have rightful coverage. Just because the policy expires we don’t believe that a claim that would have been rightfully covered should suddenly be denied. When a claim is filed after a policy has expired it will absolutely still be afforded coverage as long as the event occurred during the time the policy was still active.

Any insurance program will provide compensation when a loss event occurs that falls under the provisions of the policy. Elite Beauty Society policies come with strong coverage limits to ensure our members against these losses. General liability coverage insures against loss from third-party injury or property damage. NACAMS also provides members with additional protections built for the real world such as an identity protection plan.

How much does microblading insurance cost?

Why do beauty professionals need microblading insurance?

Any activity that is hands-on with clients creates more opportunities for claims asserting some form of damage occurred as a result. Microblading only increases this risk by employing an extremely sharp tool that’s used around sensitive areas of the face. General liability insurance covers events like a client tripping and hurting themselves entering your premises. This sounds mundane, but “slip and fall” cases account for thousands of claims against businesses each year. Professional liability insurance provides coverage for claims against your service itself i.e. malpractice. Perhaps you pushed the microblading tool a tad too hard and accidentally hurt your client. Whatever the reason, and even if the claim is entirely without merit, claims like these can spell financial ruin for a beauty professional that doesn’t hold the protection of a comprehensive microblading insurance policy.

I only rent a booth at a salon, do I need microblading insurance?

Absolutely. As a contractor, you are seen as a separate entity from the salon and therefore have your own liabilities. The salon owner’s insurance may provide limited coverage in some cases but the only surety of protection is to hold your own microblading insurance policy.

I work for a salon chain, why do I need microblading insurance?

Even when you are an employee for a salon, you can still be held liable when a loss event occurs. Many cases exist where former clients go after both the salon and the individual professional to seek restitution. NACAMS is dedicated to the betterment of health and wellness in all people so offer our policies to the benefit of the teachers, educators, and providers that are the professionals in the beauty industry. Our policies afford these professionals with a cost-effective means to protect themselves and their careers from an unforeseen event that without insurance coverage could cripple a business and deteriorate personal finances.

What are the microblading insurance coverage limits?

Elite Beauty Insurance insurance for microblading provides the perfect blend of coverage and additional protections to give our members the best all-around coverage available. Limits include:

  • Professional/General Liability: $2 Million per occurrence / $3 Million annual aggregate
  • Identity Protection Coverage: $25,000

What benefits does NACAMS provide with microblading insurance?

We’ve also partnered with some of the very best names in the industry to offer exclusive members-only discounts and early access to products, accessories, and events.

Can I practice microblading without a license?

Most states require microblading professionals to meet certain licensing and training requirements in order to perform this specialization on clients. The best bet is to always check your state board’s website for details concerning your particular locale. Requirements often change so be sure to stay up-to-date with your state.

Does NACAMS offer a microblading student liability policy?

Students can purchase a liability policy with the same robust coverage as our professional policies. For just $60, students receive a full year of coverage. For those students interested in microblading, this specialization can be added to their policy once they have completed their training and apply for an Insurance Plus professional policy. Easily overlooked, insurance for students is vital. During clinics, outreach events, and other training, students will be practicing techniques on and around others. An event that couldn’t possibly be planned for can occur that, without comprehensive insurance, can spell ruin for a student’s career before it even gets started.

What kind of insurance does a microblading professional need?

Microblading professionals use extreme skill and steady hands to apply long-lasting treatments. A solid insurance program will include generous coverage limits for general and professional claims. Value is added to the policy through member benefits programs which should be curated for the greatest possible benefit to members. At NACAMS and Elite Beauty Society we include all of these provisions, at incredible rates, with exceptional customer service from real-life insurance agents.

Do I need a license to purchase insurance for microblading?

Yes, NACAMS requires that you have all the requisite certifications and licensure required by your locale in order to purchase an effective insurance policy. Always check your state board’s website for the most up-to-date information concerning the requirements of your chosen modality.

How long does it take to get a policy?

The entire NACAMS application process generally takes only minutes to complete and then provides instant coverage and proof of insurance.

What are some claims microblading professionals have faced?

Claims come in many forms, making any business endeavor have a certain degree of risk. Microblading increases this risk because it is hands-on and involves using a sharp instrument on the face. Loss-events only limited by your imagination and can include those like:

  • A client rolls off your treatment chair and holds you liable for their injuries.
  • A client has a terrible allergic reaction to a product you use during treatment and demands you pay their doctor bills.
  • You are locking up for the night when a robbery-by-force takes all of your tools.
  • A client overflows the toilet in the space you are renting and the wood floors are ruined. The property owner holds you liable.
These are just a few of the seemingly endless number of events that can befall a microblading professional in the course of their career. Even for those claims that are completely baseless, quality insurance coverage provides ample protection for legal defense fees and other costs that may arise during the claims process.
