What is Barre?
Barre is a system of exercise marked by its use of the ballet barre to support individuals during practice. Most barre workouts combine elements of dance, Pilates and yoga; however, each method maintains slight structural differences from the others.
In practicing barre exercises, individuals hope to achieve lean, dancer-like physiques. Classes often require balance and stamina, as students are encouraged to maintain their poses for extended periods of time. The low-impact nature of the exercise also makes it a highly accessible workout regime, practiced by people of all ages, body types and fitness levels. Some methods even incorporate props, such as support cushions or straps, to accommodate those with injuries and health conditions.
Lotte Berk, a famous German ballet dancer, is often attributed as the founder of barre exercise. In the 1950s, she developed an exercise method for women to improve their core stability, strength and flexibility. Although founded in England, Berk’s method gained much popularity upon its arrival in the United States, inspiring other dancers, such as Cindy Sites, to develop similar techniques.
There are many health benefits associated with barre, including improved strength, flexibility, balance and alignment. By focusing on core stability, the workouts are able to stretch and strengthen the core abdominal muscles.
Although the exercises are challenging at times, their use of controlled, isometric movements reduces pressure on the joints, eliminating unnecessary tension in the body. The extended duration of poses also builds stamina, improves posture and increases flexibility.
Today, there are numerous styles of barre practiced in studios and gyms around the country. Some of the popular methods include:
