Xtend Barre
Xtend Barre is a ballet barre workout rooted in the principles of Pilates (i.e., concentration, control, stabilization, breath, flow and precision). Andrea Rogers, a certified Pilates instructor, founded the method after incorporating elements of dance and music into her Pilates classes. She hoped to improve her clients’ results by expanding their ranges of motion and offering them more challenges in rhythm, coordination and cardiovascular fitness.[1]
Rogers’ method evolved into a fast-paced, total-body workout that uses the ballet barre to accomplish Pilates, dance and sculpting exercises. Similar to other low-impact exercises, Xtend Barre exercises can be easily modified to accommodate beginners, expectant mothers or clients with injuries. The multi-leveled routine can also be modified for advanced students who are looking for a more challenging workout. Practicing this method of barre helps to create a long, lean, proportional physique.[2]
Teacher Training
Xtend Barre instructors must undergo an extensive five-day teacher-training program in order to gain certification. The curriculum includes basic anatomy and Pilates mat foundations, among other subjects. To be eligible for the training program, teachers must complete a minimum of 20 classes and have one year of teaching experience, preferably in dance, Pilates or another group exercise. They also need to be personable, approachable and passionate about fitness, positive energy and teaching.
The 36-hour training course covers the basic repertoire of exercises, anatomy specifics, Pilates mat fundamentals and class lesson plans. Trainees should expect to receive direct feedback from their trainers and to work out. Upon completion of the program, new teachers are required to submit a video of them teaching a 55-minute class to at least three people.
